Instead of what you have, which is dead. Not looking unto him. Go back. Have and keep what God said. Abide in it. Do what he said vs. “dead works” doing anything BUT what he says or said.

To “hold it fast” - this, “have and keep” the Word of God. Just as Jesus said. To “abide” in his word. That if you don’t you dry up; wither away; dead. Are cut away as dead branches. Gathered up and cast into the fire. Jesus said this plainly already in John 15:1–8
So, the “Key Point” is Jesus Christ.
Heaven and earth shall pass away but God’s Word shall never pass away, and, he decreed Sardis was to live by every word proceeds out of his mouth, just like he decreed you live the same way.
To ‘bring to one’s mind something or someone from the past which is the Word of God. To live by every word that proceeds out of his mouth. That’s the “works of God,” that, we took, today, live by every word proceeds out of his mouth, just like those in Sardis.
Says in Matthew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” - Jesus Christ. The Word of God.

So, the Church is Sardis isn’t “doing” anything. Dead. Not abiding. Just has a name, but are not doing anything he says; and they are not looking for him coming. Like he told EVERYBODY to above in Matthew 24:36. They’re not looking for him anymore. Looking “how” they’re going to pay the mortgage this month, or how they're going to reduce the electric bill. Looking how they’re going to get Suzie into College next year, when there isn’t any money for it. The cares and pleasures of this life and snuck in, and they no longer abide in the Word of God.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Sardis: You already have his name; remember [have and be able to bring to one’s own mind what you had in the past] what they already received and heard. vs.
Repent. (By the Word of God vs. your own word; like Sardis: dead)

Be “watchful” - “watching” [watching someone or something closely; alert and vigilant] - which if you’re “watchful” about your house, or the neighbor’s dog, how he somehow gets in and secretly poops in the lawn, so you watch and wait for the neighbor’s dog vs. set your mind on things above, which is the Word of God.
It’s INCOMPLETE without you look unto him. You do, it’s a work that he wants that’s COMPLETE. And? All “Complete” in the dictionary means is, you don’t have to add to, or take away anything from it. It’s Perfect. Because he makes up the lack. He’s God.
